What's inside the new year journal prompts printable

  • Page 1: Looking back at 2026. Eight new year reflection questions, each with four writing lines: three moments you want to remember, what surprised you, what took more time than it deserved, what you're proud of, what you learned about how you work best, who made your year better, what you started and didn't finish, and what you're ready to let go of.
  • Page 2: Looking ahead to 2027. Eight journal prompts for the new year: how you want an ordinary weekday to feel, one thing you'd be proud to finish by December, what you want to learn, try or visit, what you'll say no to, who you want to see more often, what a good week looks like, one small habit worth keeping, and what would make 2027 a good year even if nothing big happens.
  • Page 3: My new year reset. "2027 in three words", three columns for stop, start and keep, an eight-step reset checklist, and a dotted notes box.
  • Page 4: A letter to me in 2027. A lined letter page with a "written on" date and three gentle starters. Fold it, put it at the back of your notebook, and open it on December 31, 2027.

How to use these new year journal prompts

  1. Print the pages you need. Use page 1 and page 2 on their own, or all four for a full new year reset.
  2. Pick a quiet evening. Any evening between mid-December and mid-January works. You don't have to start on January 1.
  3. Look back first. Answer the 2026 questions before the 2027 ones. Skip any prompt that doesn't speak to you.
  4. Do the reset page last. Your answers usually point to what goes in stop, start and keep.
  5. Keep the pages together. Clip them into a folder, or trim them and glue them into the front of your bullet journal, so you can reread them in June.

A new year reset in one evening

The checklist on page 3 is a short new year reset you can do at the kitchen table: reread last year's notebook or skim your calendar, write down your three proudest moments, sort unfinished tasks into keep, schedule or let go, clear one shelf, drawer or inbox, add birthdays and big dates to your 2027 calendar, pick one goal and its first small step, choose a word for 2027, and plan the first week of January.

It's close to what the Bullet Journal method calls yearly migration: review your old notebook, ask what you learned, and move over only what still matters.

From journal prompts to a weekly plan

Your answers are most useful when they show up in your weeks, not only in January. Once you know what a good week looks like for you, plan each week around it.

If you'd rather not redraw a weekly spread every Sunday, Carnet is a digital bullet journal for your week. It runs in your browser, with nothing to install, and you can open a sample week on the Carnet journal page without creating an account. If you keep using it, there's a 7-day trial, then it's $10 a month. Keep your journal prompts on paper and plan each week in Carnet.

FAQ

Are these new year journal prompts free?

Yes. Enter your email in the form and we send you the PDF in US Letter and A4. There's nothing to pay.

What are good new year reflection questions?

Simple, open questions about the year that's ending: what you want to remember, what you learned, what took too much of your time and what you're ready to let go of. Page 1 has eight of them for 2026.

How long does it take to fill in?

Pages 1 and 2 take about an hour if you answer every prompt. You can also answer two or three a night during the first week of January.

What is a new year reset?

A short review at the start of the year: you look back at the old year, sort what's unfinished, choose what you want from the new one and set up your first month. Page 3 gives you a checklist for it.

What paper size should I print it on?

In the US and Canada, print the US Letter file (8.5 x 11 in). Almost everywhere else, use the A4 file. Choose "actual size" or "100%" in your printer settings.

Is there a digital version?

No, this template is a printable PDF only. Carnet, our digital bullet journal, is for planning your week in the browser; it isn't a digital copy of these prompts.
